The fourth generation was produced between 1990 and 2003, and it is the first Volkswagen with water-cooled front-mounted engine. It remains long on the market and becomes the second most produced car in Germany. The reason why it was so demanded is that the several uses it had. A long and short wheelbase and roofs could be chosen, with different doors and a different number of seats. In 1996 it had a facelift with a longer front part for the bigger six-cylinder VR6 which was also known as T4b. Syncro was another model available with 2.4D, 2.5Tdi, and 2.5 petrol engines, locking rear differential and four-wheel drive. It is a very beloved car with own fans across the world and many online forums. Two years after its production it was transported to North America and continued to do so until late 2003 known as Eurovan. It is not very liked in the USA, so it remains on the market just in Mexico and Canada. They had to adjust the model for the American market, that is why they introduced a model VR6 Rialta with VR6 engine and automatic transmission. In 1991 was introduced another short wheelbase versions under the names GLS, MV Weekender, GL, CL and Westfalia Camperised with 2.4 liters diesel engine and 77hp. The engine was updated to VR6 in 1997 and lastly updated with AXK in 2002.
Some of the exciting features of Eurovan MV, Westfalia and Weekender are the convertible bed, table and more, and the home environment the interior provides. Closet, removable roof and more beds with kitchen and running water were also available in the Camper.
